Life at home is packed with opportunities to support Whole Child Development—especially when Learning through Play becomes part of the daily rhythm. For parents, caregivers, and home educators, the Six Bricks at home system offers a powerful way to foster growth using just six colourful LEGO bricks.
Originally developed by the LEGO Foundation and brought to life in South Africa by Care for Education under the leadership of Brent Hutcheson, Six Bricks is now used globally to support brain-based learning in schools and homes alike.
Through short, fun, and structured Six Bricks Activities, children can develop vital skills such as cognitive flexibility, fine motor skills, communication skills, and emotional development—all while having fun.
What Is Six Bricks?
Six Bricks is a tool for play-based learning that uses six different coloured LEGO bricks. These bricks are used in quick, guided activities that promote cognitive development, motor skills, literacy skills, and mathematical skills.
Thanks to Six Bricks Learning, families and educators now have access to practical activity cards, guides, and activity ideas that make experiential learning possible at home and in any learning environment.
Why Use Six Bricks at Home?
Using Six Bricks at home can support:
- Executive functioning skills like memory, planning, and inhibitory control
- Motor skills including gross motor movement and fine motor control
- Visual memory skills, spatial skills, and pattern recognition
- Social interaction and collaborative skills through family or group activities
- Multiple learning areas including language development, mathematics learning, and coding skills
This is multi-sensory learning in action—simple, fast, and profoundly impactful.

Your Weekly Six Bricks Home Routine
Here’s how to use Six Bricks Learning every day to foster whole-child growth:
🔹 Monday – Memory Challenge
Activity: Colour Sequence Copy. Show a brick sequence for 5 seconds. Hide it. Ask your child to rebuild it from memory.
🧠 Skills: Visual memory skills, pattern games, cognitive flexibility

🏃♀️ Skills: Gross motor movement, rhythm, listening, spatial reasoning
🔹 Wednesday – Emotional Check-in
Activity: Mood Tower. Each brick stands for a feeling. Children stack a “mood tower” to share how they feel.

Activity: Build a Safe Path. Create an obstacle scene using bricks. Ask your child to “code” a path through it using specific colour rules.
🧩 Skills: Problem-solving skills, spatial skills, coding skills
🔹 Friday – Story Day
Activity: Story Bricks. Each brick colour prompts a story element (who, where, what, why, how). Build a collaborative tale.
📚 Skills: Communication skills, social skills, literacy skills
🔹 Saturday – Nature Build
Activity: Garden Design. Build flowers, animals, and trees. Add a story about their habitat and needs.
